Hildegard CD

I recorded these chants in 2002. It's just me. On a couple of tracks, there's more than one me. But that's the extent of studio magic. Just my voice, just Hildegard's poetry and melodies. To purchase via PayPal, click on the button.

Caritas abundat
Nunc gaudeant
Quia felix puericia

Text and translations
The translations come from a variety of sources, from scholarly to poetic.

Caritas abundat
Caritas abundat in omnia de imis excellentissima super sidera atque amantissima in omnia quia summo Regi osculum pacis dedit.
Caritas abundat
Charity abounds toward all, most exalted from the depths above the stars, and most loving toward all, for she has given the supreme king the kiss of peace.

O vos imitatores
O vos imitatores
O you imitators of the most exalted person, in the most precious and glorious symbolic act: How great is your beauty when a man steps forth, binding and loosing in God the wayward and the wayfarers: Making white and black beautiful, and lifting great burdens away. For you both share the duties of the angelic order and foreknow the firmest foundations, wherever they are to be laid, so great is your honor. Making white and black beautiful, and lifting great burdens away.

Quia felix puercia
Quia felix puercia in laudibili Ruperto ad Deum anhelavit et mundum reliquit ideo ipse in caelesti harmonia fulget et ideo etiam angelica turba Filium Dei laudando concinit.
Quia felix puercia
Because in Rupert, worthy of praise, a happy childhood sighed for God and renounced the world, he now gleams amid celestial harmony, and the angelic host also sings in concord, praising the Son of God.

O viridissima virga
O viridissima virga ave que in ventoso flabro sciscitationis sanctorum prodisti. Cum fenit tempus quod tu floruisti in ramis tuis ave ave sit tibi quia calor solis in te sudavit sicut odor balsami. Nam in te floruit pulcher flos qui odorem dedit omnibus aromatibus que arida erant. Et illa apparuerunt omnia in viriditate plena. Unde celi dederunt rorem super gramen et omnis terra leta facta est quoniam viscera ipsius frumentum protulerunt et quoniam volucres celi nidos in ipsa habuerunt. Deinde facta est esca hominibus et gaudium magnum epulantium. Unde o suavis Virgo in te non deficit ullum gaudium. Hec omnia Eva contempsit. Nunc autem laus sit Altissimo.
O viridissima virga
Hail, O greenest branch! You came forth in the windy blast of the questioning of saints. When the time came for you to blossom in your branches, "hail" was the word to you, for the heat of the sun distilled in you a fragrance like balsam. For in you bloomed the beautiful flower that gave fragrance to all the spices that had grown dry. And they all appeared in full verdure. So the skies rained dew on the grass and the whole earth exulted, for her womb brought forth wheat, and the birds of heaven made their nests in it. Then food was prepared for humans and great joy for the banqueters. So in you, sweet Virgin, no joy ever fails. Eve despised all these things! But now, praise be to the Most High.

De patria
De patria etiam earum et de aliis regionibus viri religiosi et sapientes ipsis adiuncti sunt qui eas in virginea custodia servabant et qui eis in omnibus ministrabant.
De patria
Both from their fatherland and from other regions, religious men and wise men joined them; they protected them in virginal custody and ministered to them in all things.

O vis aeternitatis
O vis aeternitatis
O strength of eternity, you who ordered all things in your heart, by your Word all were created as you wished, and your Word himself put on flesh in that form which was taken from Adam. And thus his garments were cleansed from the greatest pain. O how great is the kindness of the Savior who set all things free through his incarnation, which divinity breathed forth without chain of sin. And thus his garments were cleansed from the greatest pain. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. And thus his garments were cleansed from the greatest pain.

O speculum columbae
O speculum columbae castissimae qui inspexisti mysticam largitatem in purissimo fonte. O mira floriditas quae numquam arescens cecidisti quia altissimus plantator misit te. O suavissima quies amplexuum solis tu es specialis filius agni in electa amicicia novae sobolis.
O speculum columbae
O mirror of the dove of most chaste beauty, you looked upon the mystic largesse in the purest source. O wondrous flower, you neve withered or wilted because the highest Gardener planted you. O sweetest rest in the sun's embraces, you are the special son of the Lamb in the chosen friendship of a new generation.

Nunc gaudeant
Nunc gaudeant mater na viscera Ecclesiae quia in superna symphonia filii eius in sinum suum collocati sunt. Unde, o turpissime serpens confusus es quonuam quos tua aestimatio in visceribus tuis habuit, nunc fulgent in sanguine Filii Dei et ideo laus tibi sit, Rex altissime, alleluia.
Nunc gaudeant
Now let the motherly heart of the Church rejoice, because in supernal harmony her children are gathered into her bosom. Hence, O shameful serpent, you are confounded, because the ones your jealousy held in its maw now gleam in the blood of God's Son, and therefore praise be to you, King Most High. Alleluia.
