How cool is this? Houston’s Weekly Chic just did a post on me. She contacted me over the weekend and we interviewed by email.

I love the spiderweb references. Usually the references are to snowflakes, and then I have to resist getting all fussy about six-sided vs eight-sided. And it’s all pretty silly, because we’re not talking about some level of scientific accuracy. It’s thread, loop on loop.

Anyway, everything is all updated, or will be by the evening, and there’s a new Flickr page listed to the right. Right now, it’s just jewelry photos, but as soon as I can, I’ll add other images.

How unique are the colors?

I posted 3 pairs of earrings to my Etsy shop this morning, and I’ll do the other 3 tomorrow morning. I’m giving a lot of thought as to how to describe the coloring. For the first batch of jewelry, the ones being posted now, they won’t ever be exactly duplicated, because I was using someone else’s dyes. I bought different ones, and I won’t be using them in quite the same way. But the solid colors I’m just starting on now will quite likely be able to be matched later, if I use the same dyes in the same concentrations.

But for the handpainted hanks of thread? There’s much more variation built in. I might paint different lengths, they might bleed into each other differently, etc.

It’s possible that I’m just overthinking this. Actually, it’s likely. I’m awfully good at overthinking.

However, I will not do another pair like the teal-to-mauve ones. I painted that one from one end to the other with subtle gradations of color. And then I had to adjust the pattern to use the entire thread, not running out and not stopping short. That was a royal pain. I’d do something like that again on commission, but not on my own. Sheesh.

Hand-dyed earrings

I haven’t quite got these up on Etsy yet, because I’m waiting to photograph them on my model, but here’s a sneak preview. This is from my first dyeing session, with Laura Viada at HCCC.

On my own

So I bought some dye and all the various supplies, and tonight I got started on dyeing thread all on my own. I made 8 hanks of thread at 30 yd each. Three of the hanks are painted in variegated colors: reds, blues and purples. I also dyed three pairs of already crocheted earrings, and several practice pieces. (I’m thinking dollhouse rugs?) It’s Saturday night, and they need to sit for 48 hours, so Monday evening, I’ll get to see what I’ve actually accomplished. I’m especially interested in the olive green color. Mainly because the dye powder is bright orange! At first I thought it was mislabeled, but then I noticed that a number of the powders bore little resemblance to the color chart. It must be…Chemistry! Huzzah for Science!

Incomplete accomplishment

This morning and this evening, I turned a bunch of tiny colorful doilies into jewelry. Five pairs of earrings, and one earring/pendant set. The pieces made from dyed thread look great! But nothing actually exists until I photograph it. That’s my project for the next few days. Maybe I need a Flickr account. Geez, I’m getting so Web 2.0.
